Post Series: Black Love Stories

Tell Us Your Story. . .

What does Black Love mean to you?
Black Love means emotionally healthy and spiritually wealthy relationships. It means communication, respect and self respect; planning and meeting goals together; supporting, and loving one another; in spite of difficult times. It means holding up the mirror, although the image may not be pretty at times, but doing it in a loving and caring manner. It means celebrating wins together; we are a team!

The Love of Self

Who has influenced you the most in life & why?
My mom has influenced me the most in life–in some good ways and in not so good ways–due to her lifestyle and choices that affected me.
How do you define holistic health?
I define holistic health as mentally, emotionally, and physically in sync. When one of those things is out of balance, it can wreak havoc on the others.
Why do you believe holistic health is important for people of color?
I believe holistic health is important to people of color because being out of balance can cause an abundance of problems, issues, and disappointments in one’s life.
What do you love the most in life & why?
I value my independence and freedom above anything, as they give me the chance to explore, grow, and learn without restraints placed upon me by society, family, etc.

The Love of Family

Describe how you felt when you either found out you were pregnant or when you saw your child for the very first time.
Not applicable.
What do you believe is the most important attribute a parent can teach a child & why?
As an Educator, the most important attribute a parent can teach a child is allowing them to find their own voice.
What does the love of family mean to you?
The love of family means support, unconditional love, and emotional rollercoasters.
Please share your thoughts on blended families.
My thoughts on blended families…If it works, it works.

The Love of Friends

Do you believe it’s important to have the love of platonic friends?
Friendships are extremely important. They give you solace, rationale when you don’t have any, a home away from home, a shoulder to lean on and unconditional love.
Can men & women “just be friends?” Why or why not?
In my opinion, and due to my own experiences, I say yes men and women can be friends. I have always had male friends in my life without any romantic intentions.

The Love of Your Life

Tell us how you met your partner.
My partner and I met at my best friend’s family reunion. She talked me into going with her and I met my husband for the first time there. He was away in college; but we kept in touch, on and off, through the years. And then, several years later, we met up again and we decided to make it work.
Please share your wedding day experience (If Applicable).
I didn’t want a wedding but I had one anyway. I am not a girly girl, so let’s just say it was fine.
Name some things you love about your partner (or yourself).
My partner communicates well, is honorable, humble, respectful, and a goal-getter. He also will tell me the truth about myself.
Share something you’ve learned from your partner.
My partner taught me the importance of building relationships, follow through, and not worrying about inconsequential things in life; doing what you can do and allowing God to take care of the rest.
What advice would you like to give young couples?
My advice to young couples…First, find out who you are and then, find someone who makes you better. Be honest with yourself about what you want in a relationship; find out what is non-negotiable to you; and don’t change yourself to make someone happy because you will lose yourself in the process.

Conclusion

What advice do you wish you could have shared with your younger self?
To believe in myself, find more opportunities abroad, and don’t believe what “they” say!
Why does Black love matter to you?
Black Love Matters to me because I love to see happy, healthy, black families thriving!
